Like meat and eggs, the quality of seafood is determined by the diet and conditions of the animal you’re about to eat. Salmon, for example, is a superfood, if it is wild caught. These fish eat a diet that encourages the production of natural and healthy muscle and organ tissue, which translates into more Omega 3 fatty acids. Farm raised fish, however, are fed massive amounts of corn and grain to get them as fat, as fast, as possible. They live as miserably as a fish can, crammed together, sick and diseased. They are pumped with antibiotics to prevent diseases from spreading in the cramped environment. These fish are unhealthy and provide low-quality fat that should be avoided. Eating farm raised fish is not nearly as healthy as the farming industry would have you believe.
When choosing fish, go for “wild caught.” If “wild caught” is not clearly labeled, it is almost certainly farm raised.
If you can’t afford wild caught, go for these budget-friendly options.
- light tuna
- anchovies
- sardines
- Atlantic herring
- Atlantic mackerel
Trader Joe’s has an excellent selection of frozen wild caught fish
